Recruiting Neonatal Nurses - Medecins Sans Frontieres

Location: International

The world’s most vulnerable babies need your skills.

At any one time, around 2,500 international personnel contribute to a global team of close to 30,000 Médecins Sans Frontières field staff who provide emergency medical care in more than 60 countries. Australian and New Zealander professionals fill more than 200 field positions annually.

As a neonatal nurse working for Médecins Sans Frontières your training and supervisory skills will be utilised to the full. The roles you play may vary from setting up and managing a newborn unit within a hospital, providing clinical “hands on” care for unwell or severely ill neonates, or managing care of pre-term babies. You may also be taking the lead on teaching and implementing Kangaroo Mother Care.

Neonatal nurses working for Médecins Sans Frontières work very closely with national staff who have experience in low resource settings if not specifically in neonatal care. You will be supporting local staff in the upgrading of their skills.

In the field, our Newborn Units (NBU) vary greatly, ranging from high capacity settings with CPAP capabilities to more basic units with minimal possible intervention (O2 and IV therapy only). All our projects are supported by Paediatric Advisors and very clear guidelines and protocols.

We are looking for Neonatal Nurses who can commit to an assignment of at least six months (9+ months preferred).

Your skills and experience will include:

  • RN (Div.1) or Midwife qualifications and a minimum of two years experience in Special Care Nursery or Newborn Unit
  • Recent experience in neonatal resuscitation
  • Recent experience in recognition and management of common neonatal issues such as prematurity, hypoxemia, and hypothermia
  • Ability to work in a low-tech environment
  • Assets may include experience in additional areas – particularly NICU, PICU, Obstetrics, or Paediatrics.

Recruitment is open year-round. Working to deliver medical aid overseas requires a serious commitment. We are looking for people who have taken their time to consider what it might be like and are prepared for a significant challenge.
