Registered Nurses (Neonatal Intensive Care) – Newborn Care Unit, Specialty and Procedural Services, Southport, Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service.

About the role

Provide nursing leadership in proactively managing and coordinating clinical practice and the provision of human, financial and material resources in accordance with organisational goals, ensuring a cost effective nursing service focused on providing exceptional, evidence-based patient care.

Requirements of the role

  • Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Certified copies of relevant qualification and registration must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties.
  • A Bachelor of Nursing or Midwifery or equivalent is a mandatory qualification for this position.
  • It is a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment as required by HR Policy B1 [measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), pertussis (whooping cough) and [hepatitis B].
  • A post-graduate qualification in relevant area of specialty will be highly regarded.
  • Completion of a graduate program or equivalent (i.e. 1 year experience) is required.
  • Current or recent tertiary level neonatal intensive care experience is highly desirable.
  • Have a recognised qualification in neonatal nursing or be working towards gaining formal neonatal nursing qualifications is highly desirable.
  • This position requires effective computer skills or the ability to acquire computer skills relevant to the role in a short timeframe.
  • This position may be required to work across Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service.

About the unit

The Newborn Care Unit at Gold Coast University Hospital currently sits within Women’s, Newborn and Children’s Services, Speciality and Procedural Services.

The unit currently has 8 commissioned Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) cots and 20 Special Care Nursey (SCN) cots. Current practice is to admit babies fulfilling Level 6 Queensland Clinical Services Capability Framework criteria which includes but is not limited to:

  • 24 weeks gestation
  • All forms of mechanical ventilation including High Frequency Oscillation Ventilation (HFOV)
  • Nitric Oxide therapy
  • Therapeutic cooling
  • Parenteral Nutrition
  • Exchange transfusions
  • Neonatal surgical procedures

Infants with complex surgical conditions or requiring cardiac surgery are managed at either Mater Mother’s or Lady Cilento Children’s Hospitals.

The Newborn Care Unit does not provide a neonatal emergency retrieval service; these are facilitated by the Neonatal Retrieval Emergency Service Southern Queensland (NeoRESQ) team out of the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
