Newborn Care Unit - Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – Women’s, Newborn and Children’s Services, Southport, Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service.

About the role

Responsible and accountable for role-modelling excellent patient focused, evidence-based nursing care at an advanced level in a specified field of practice providing leadership, direction, and support to other nursing staff, students and the interdisciplinary team.  Provide clinical leadership utilising advanced clinical skills and knowledge, and problem solving skills.

Requirements of the role

  • Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Certified copies of relevant qualification and registration must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties.
  • It is a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: insert relevant VPD categories as required by HR Policy B1 [measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), pertussis (whooping cough), [hepatitis B].
  • A Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent is a mandatory qualification for this position.
  • A minimum of a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma within a relevant specialty area is highly desirable. Where the successful applicant does not currently hold a relevant post-graduate qualification, commitment to completion of post-graduate study within an agreed timeframe is expected and will form part of the performance review process.
  • This position requires effective computer skills or the ability to acquire computer skills relevant to the role in a short timeframe.
  • Professional affiliations related to the specialty are highly desirable.
  • This position may be required to work across Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service.

About the unit

The Newborn Care Unit (NCU) at Gold Coast University Hospital is a part of Women’s, Newborn and Children’s Services and is comprised of the 9 cot Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and 24 cot Special Care Nursery. The NICU admits babies fulfilling Level 6 Queensland Clinical Services Capability Framework criteria which includes but is not limited to:

  • 24 weeks gestation.
  • Parenteral Nutrition.
  • Nitric Oxide therapy.
  • Exchange transfusions.
  • Therapeutic cooling.
  • Neonatal surgical procedures.
  • All forms of mechanical ventilation including High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation.
  • Babies requiring cardiac surgery or with complex surgical conditions will be managed at either Mater Mother’s or Lady Cilento Children’s Hospitals. The NCU does not provide a neonatal emergency retrieval service; this service is facilitated by the Neonatal Retrieval Emergency Service Southern Queensland (NeoRESQ) team who operate from the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Brisbane.
