Where you’ll be working
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at John Hunter Children’s Hospital in Newcastle is one of the largest and busiest NICUs in NSW and
the only tertiary NICU outside of Sydney. This 44-bed, state-of-the-art unit provides intensive medical and surgical care to newborns across
the Hunter New England and Mid North Coast regions.
You’ll join a highly skilled and passionate multidisciplinary team working in a modern environment equipped with advanced neonatal
technology. The team culture is dynamic, collaborative and supportive, with a strong commitment to family-centred care, professional
development and staff wellbeing.
About the role
This role is suited to an endorsed Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NP) or a Transitional Nurse Practitioner (TNP) progressing toward
endorsement. You will provide advanced clinical assessment and management of neonates within the NICU, including care of extremely preterm,
surgical and critically unwell infants. The role also involves attending high-risk and emergency births, delivering expert neonatal
resuscitation and supporting maternity colleagues.
In addition to advanced clinical care, you will contribute to education through face-to-face teaching and clinical skills development while continuing to build advanced practice capability. You’ll work closely with Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, Transitional Nurse Practitioners, medical registrars and the wider multidisciplinary team on a rotating roster.
Structured orientation, mentoring and ongoing feedback are built into the role, supporting your continued development and progression toward
Nurse Practitioner endorsement. Regular formal and informal feedback, including through the LEX recognition program, supports continuous
professional growth.
About you
You are a motivated and committed neonatal nurse seeking to advance your practice in a tertiary NICU setting. You bring strong clinical
expertise, a collaborative approach, and a passion for delivering high-quality, family-centred neonatal care.
Essential criteria:
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA, with current endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner or, if appointed as a Transitional Nurse Practitioner, evidence of substantial progress toward Nurse Practitioner endorsement.
- Where endorsement has not yet been achieved, appointment will be on a temporary basis (up to three years) to support progression toward endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner.
- You have completed, or are currently enrolled in, a Master of Nurse Practitioner program and demonstrate a strong commitment to ongoing learning, advanced clinical practice and excellence in neonatal care.
